It is also positioned as a work that entered a new sonic realm with its bold and experimental approach. Originally released on Vertigo Records in September 1972 "Volume 4". By the time the band began work on their fourth album, to be released in 1972, it was conveniently titled "Volume 4. The band was gaining momentum, and the fan base was growing with continued touring and album releases. However, the members no longer found the endless rock cycle (album/tour permanence) rewarding. They wanted to further develop their abilities to expand the parameters of what they had created. So the band was determined to go into uncharted territory with conviction for a new album. The band was not ready to instantly put themselves back into their comfort zone musically, they just did what was expected of them. They wanted to sweep away the darkness and pessimism that had surrounded their music until that moment. Here was an opportunity for Black Sabbath, a band that would lead the scene rather than merely follow it, to explore their own uncharted territory. And with "Volume 4," which reveals how to mature and develop as a songwriter and musician, Black Sabbath succeeded with class. When the album was released in September 1972, Black Sabbath seemed determined to exercise its hard-won control over the recording and prove what was now feasible, resulting in a three-dimensional album.
