This video is a tribute to the great conductor Nikolaus Arnoncourt, who passed away on March 5, 2016. The video was recorded at the Zurich Opera House in 2004 and is the second Fidelio release for Arnoncourt, following a performance released on CD in the 1990s. Arnoncourt originally emerged as a cellist, but he also explored ancient instrumental techniques and founded the Vienna Konzentus Musiks in 1953, which became a pioneer in ancient music orchestras and greatly inspired audiences of the time. While performing Bach and Handel's works one after another, the orchestra also entered the field of opera, and since the 1970s has made the Zurich Opera House its home, performing numerous operas, starting with baroque operas directed by Jean-Pierre Ponnel and Mozart, each time drawing audiences into a whirlpool of confusion and excitement. The company is also well known for its ability to draw audiences into a whirlpool of confusion and excitement.The production of "Fidelio," which will be omitted in the "Info" section, was directed by Jürgen Flimm, who had been the theater director of the Salzburg Festival for a long time, and was much talked about for the intense human drama that unfolded on a simple stage set. Arnoncourt also showed his keen eye for young talent by casting Jonas Kaufmann, an up-and-coming tenor (who was not yet well known), to play the role of Fidelio. Kaufmann's singing was highly acclaimed, and he was described as "perhaps the best tenor Germany has produced in the last half century.
