The Unknown Horns of the German Romantic PeriodThe German Horn Ensemble has researched and recorded a little-known horn piece from around 1850. The program opens with a work by Ranulph Marie Eustache Marchi Dosmont, a composer little known except that he was active in France from 1826-91; his "Greetings to the Forest" for four horns, composed in 1855, is said to have been dedicated to Saint-Saens. Carl August Hensel was active in Dresden as a cellist in the Saxon court orchestra, and in 1859, a horn quartet version was published by the Dresden Music Publishers, and in 1860, a concertino for two horns and piano was published by the same publisher, indicating that this piece was very popular.
