Monza, Carlo (1735-1801)
Description:
Biondi discovers the first "string quartet" in music history! World premiere recording with members of Europa Galante! Biondi's new recording is a collection of string quartets. It is believed to be the first work in the history of music to be composed for four string instruments! The composer was Carlo Monza (1735-1801), a Milan-born composer who is little known today. It is believed that Mozart probably had some connection with him when he stayed in Milan at the age of 14, and that some of the works on which Stravinsky's Pulcinella was based were by Monza. The reason why Biondi focused on Monza was because of his research on Mozart. Mozart stayed in Milan during a trip to Italy when he was 14 years old. In order to be recognized and introduced to local musicians and the upper class, he would have visited the leading musicians of the region and also studied their works. Three of the most prominent musicians in Milan at the time were Giovanni Battista Sammartini, Giovanni Battista Lampugnani, and Carlo Monza. However, it is not yet clear what Monza's actual relationship to Mozart was (friendly, etc.). Biondi discovered the work in the Private Collection inventory about 10 years ago, but was only allowed to see it.Recently, a musicologist friend of mine discovered a copy of the score in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. It turned out that the work was not a reduction of a symphony, but was written purely for string quartet. They are more operatic in style and appeal to more than just a "classical" string quartet. Furthermore, these works are entitled "Theme Music," and each piece has its own unique development. The quartet is led by Biondi and the members of Europa Galante. They have collaborated with Biondi on operas and other productions, and their performances are in perfect harmony! King International
