A collection of works by a master of 20th century Portuguese music who devoted his life to the study of folk music Pianist Luis Duarte makes his Hyperion label debut with a recording of works by Fernando Lopes-Grasa, one of the most important Portuguese composers of the 20th century. The music, which originated in 1950s Portugal, explores a wide range of styles, impressions and influences. The "Glosas" (Eleven Traditional Portuguese Songs) is a reworking of folk songs from various regions of Portugal. Five Lullabies, also based on Portuguese folk songs, includes three world premiere recordings. Similar in style to Bartók's Microcosmos, Album for Young Pianists consists of "21 pieces of beginner to intermediate difficulty," and was written for young students. Lopes-Grasa was a composer, pianist, conductor, teacher, ethnomusicologist, and political activist from Tomar, Portugal. He dedicated his life to rediscovering and reconstructing authentic Portuguese folk music, despite the repressive environment of the "Estado Novo" (New State) dictatorship of the time. The album symbolically concludes with a song titled "Glorious Journey. This piece depicts the Portuguese Revolution of 1974 (the Carnation Revolution), when the dictatorship was overthrown by a coup d'état and Portugal regained its freedom and democracy. Luis Duarte is a professor at the Espinho Music School in Portugal, where he won the "Best Classical Album" award at the Premios Play, a Portuguese music award in 2022. Universal Music/IMS
