Description:
Second collaborative album by seven multi-talented brothers and sisters from the UK, telling the story of music passed down in their family.
River of Music" is the second collaborative album by the seven brothers and sisters of the talented Canay-Mason family, a British musical family, the first being 2020's "Carnival: Carnival of the Animals," a unique collaboration with Academy Award-winning actress Olivia Colman and children's author Michael Morpurgo. It was a unique album in which they collaborated with Academy Award-winning actress Olivia Colman and children's author Michael Morpurgo. The current album features Schubert's "Mas" Quintet, which they have played together since childhood, as well as new arrangements of their grandparents' beloved classical favorites, Welsh folk songs, and spirituals (black spirituals). The seven members, Isata, Brymer, Sheku, Konya, Geneva, Aminata, and Mariatu, have made several arrangements in addition to their performances. The seven have also recorded with viola player Edgar Francis and double bass player Toby Hughes on "Masu.
From a grandmother from Wales who crossed the ocean to Sierra Leone to follow her love, to a grandfather from Antigua who connected his unfulfilled hopes for a career in music, this album celebrates the musical thread that runs through the Kanay-Mason family. From Samuel Coleridge-Taylor's African-American spiritual "Deep River" to the traditional Welsh hymn "Ar Lan y Mor," each piece is a tribute to family roots and stories passed down through the generations. Other works include Handel's "Largo," Elgar's "Sigh," Chopin's "Fantasy Impromptu," Liszt's "Consolation" No. 3, Dvorak's "Song to the Moon," and many other diverse works, and through this collaborative album, the Canay-Mason brothers and sisters celebrate their family ties and musical heritage while also celebrating their own, Recorded at Abbey Road Studios in the summer of 2024.
The album is rounded out by a story entitled "Grandad's Dream" by author Konya Kanay-Mason. This is a story about our family and the source of our music. Music flows through the generations like a river, and our passion for listening and playing music comes from our grandparents and from their stories, which flow from the places and dreams they passed on to us.
