Sviatoslav Richter

Description:

Newly discovered, astonishing live recordings of the greatest pianists of the 20th century in their prime. A previously unreleased live recording of Sviatoslav Richter, one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century, has been discovered and is now available in a newly restored version. Performed at the Tours Festival in France and the Lucerne Festival in Switzerland in June and September 1965, when Richter was at the peak of his skills as a pianist, the recordings include Beethoven's Piano Sonatas Nos. 18, 27, 28 and 31. Like many other artists, Richter felt that he could perform more freely and better in a concert hall than in a studio. These performances are very contemporary in their approach, unafraid to take risks and express the music to the ultimate degree. Richter's close friend, pianist Elisabet Leonskaya, was struck by the artistic freedom, technical excellence, and deep love of the music in these recordings. The booklet also includes a recent interview with Elisabet Leonskaya, an essay by Jed Distler, editorial notes by Markus Kettner (in German and English), and numerous photographs, some never before published. This is the most powerful piano performance I have ever heard."(Van Cliburn) Here is Richter in his prime. His later performances of Sonata No. 18 in 1980 and 1992 come pretty close, but they are nowhere near the phenomenal pianism on display here. ......Beethoven's Sonata No. 31 from 1965 is the most powerful of Richter's many live recordings. It is the most poetic and transparent performance of Richter's many live recordings. *Gatefold, 180g vinyl Universal Music/IMS
