Limited edition. Before becoming a Decca artist, Vladimir Ashkenazy first appeared on Deutsche Grammophon in 1955 with a live recording of the Chopin Competition in Warsaw. This set combines a Rachmaninoff performance by Ashkenazy's teacher, Lev Oborin, with a live recording of a Chopin performance by Belgian Michel Bloch, who famously received a special prize from Artur Rubinstein, the chairman of the jury, five years later when he was not satisfied with the results of the same competition. The Chopin performance is also recorded live. In the late 1960s and 1970s, Deutsche Grammophon introduced many pianists at the start of their promising careers. They came from diverse backgrounds and schools. There were Russian greats such as Boris Bloch and Yuri Egorov, stars from the New World such as Steven De Groote and Zora Mahe Shaulis, and those from the Central European tradition such as Veronika Jochum von Moltke (Eugen Jochum's daughter) and Claude Elfe. There were Only a few of these musicians enjoyed such long careers as Ashkenazy. Some disappeared from the public eye, and their legacy on record is priceless.David Lively, Alexander Lonkwig, and Eva Pobłotka continue to perform today, but their debut album for Deutsche Grammophon was never released on CD. Dino Ciani, Yuri Egorov, and Stephen de Grote unfortunately died young during their careers. Other pianists like Roberto Sidon and Boris Bloch retired from the spotlight and became teachers. In addition to the superb work of Mikhail Fehlmann and Stephen de Groote, this set includes Elie Nye's Beethoven sonatas recorded at the end of his long career and the mono era "Diabelli Variations" by Swiss pianist Paul Baumgartner! The artists are all from the Clara Schumann style. These artists are associated with Clara Schumann-style pianism, while Erik ten-Berg's 1951 recording of Reger's "Telemann Variations" embodies an intellectual German style. A number of recordings are included here for the first time on CD. Debussy's Preludes, Volume 1 (1971) by Dino Ciani and Schumann's Nocturnes (1963) by Veronika Jochum von Moltke are available for the first time.
