Dietrich Buxtehude (1637-1707) was an important Baroque composer and organist active in Lübeck, whose innovative cantatas, fascinating organ works, and complex chamber music not only had a profound influence on North German music, left an indelible mark on musicians and composers like Johann Sebastian Bach. This album is rich with Buxtehude's masterpieces, including the Missa Brevis. This five-voice Mass gracefully expresses the essence of the Mass with meticulous counterpoint and deep spirituality. The famous cantata "Let Us Go to the Lord" also demonstrates Buxtehude's compositional skill in masterfully weaving hymns with lively ritornellos in eight verses.The deeper and more expressive "O Lord, If Only You Were in the World" demonstrates mastery of the ostinato technique, highlighting a soprano melody that emerges over a repeated bass theme.
