Michael Tilson Thomas (MTT) is not only an accomplished conductor, but also a pianist, composer, educator, and charismatic music commentator. MTT was a close friend of Bernstein's, and it was he who took over the New York Philharmonic's groundbreaking Young People's Concerts from Bernstein. He was also involved in the management of performance scores after Bernstein's death. His repertoire is wide-ranging, with works by composers such as Mahler, Gershwin, Ives, Copland, and others, and he has been active not only in classical music but also in Broadway musicals and jazz.MTT is also a gifted educator, and in the 1970s he took over from Bernstein to organize and conduct the Young People's Concerts, founded the New World Symphony Orchestra in 1988, and served as music director of the Pacific Music Festival. He has been a great mentor to young musicians. In recent years, he has continued to step to the podium despite being diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumor. In 1969, he was appointed Assistant Conductor of the prestigious Boston Symphony Orchestra, and later became Assistant Conductor of the Buffalo Philharmonic and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, He has served as guest conductor of the Buffalo Philharmonic and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. In Europe, he succeeded Abbado as principal conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra, and in 1995 he became music director of the San Francisco Symphony, building it into one of the most innovative orchestras in the United States.This box set contains all of MTT's recordings for CBS, Sony Classical, and RCA Red Seal between 1973 and 2005. The orchestras that performed with him, excluding those in recording formations, are the London Symphony, San Fransico Symphony, New World Symphony, Buffalo Philharmonic, and Los Angeles Philharmonic, all of which had posts, as well as the Cleveland Orchestra, Chicago Symphony, New York Philharmonic, Philharmonia Orchestra, and Bavarian Radio Symphony, Berlin Philharmonic, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, English Chamber Orchestra, St. Lukes Orchestra, Hungarian National Orchestra, etc., which shows the wide range of MTT's activities.
