The first recording for Sony Classical by Spain's leading clarinetist Joan Enric Luna is titled "Spitrual Wings" and features Brahms' Clarinet Sonata, the quintessential German Romanticism. In 1894, three years before his death, Brahms composed two clarinet sonatas for Richard Mühlfeldt, a renowned player he had met in 1891, and they were the last sonata works he completed. The following year, in 1895, the premiere in Vienna was given with Mühlfeldt's clarinet and Brahms's own piano, and was described as "heaven itself... Or beyond the most beautiful days of youth, full of sweet love and joy... It was acclaimed as "a springtime of pure joy". Coupled with the two sonatas is the Serenade Suite, composed of selected movements from Serenades Nos. 1 and 2, Brahms' young orchestral writing, which Luna himself arranged for clarinet and piano. Luna is a virtuoso soloist and chamber musician who has performed and recorded with the Tokyo Quartet and the Brodsky String Quartet, among others, and for his Brahms works, he has recorded the Clarinet Quintet with the Tokyo Quartet on Harmonia Mundi. On this album, the close partnership between Luna and Solaun on piano highlights the depth of music typical of Brahms in his later years, with overflowing singing and deep harmonies to dramatic effect, bringing out the full appeal of the works.
