The Bavarian Radio Choir and Capella de la Torre present a collection of Heinrich Schütz's most moving works and early Baroque religious choral works by Monteverdi, G. Gabrieli, Scherer, and others who were Schütz's influences Heinrich Schütz (1585-1672) was an outstanding artist in Europe during the Heinrich Schütz (1585-1672) was an outstanding artist during the turbulent years devastated by the Thirty Years' War in Europe. This moving three-part work, Musical Funeral (Musikalische Eksekwien), is considered one of his most important works and was written less than two months after his employer and lifelong friend, the humanist Prince Heinrich Posthumus Reuss of Gela, realized his death in 1635 and asked Schütz to compose it. Schütz composed the work less than two months after his employer, the humanist Duke Heinrich Posthumus Reuss, realized his death. Prince Reuss died in December 1635, and his funeral was held on February 4 of the following year. Lord Reuss prepared his funeral with great care, having the surface of the coffin engraved with contrasting passages from the Bible and lyrics from chorales (16th century Lutheran writers, including Martin Luther), so that the relationship between the adjacent texts would have theological significance. The Funeral with Music is composed of these texts, which Lord Reuss had engraved on the coffin.The whole is divided into three parts, Tr1-28 Part 1 "Concerto in the form of a German Funeral Mass" SWV279Tr29 Part 2 "Motet" SWV280Tr30 Part 3 "Simeon's Canticum" SWV281The first part, the longest of the work, was composed for SSATTB (2 sopranos, 1 alto, 2 tenors 2, bass 1) choirs and a small ensemble of soloists are composed to alternate. The second part is composed for the double choir SATB & SATB, and the third part is written for a trio of choirs and soloists by SATTB. All movements are accompanied by a bass continuo. The album also features composers who influenced Schütz. Schütz's teachers include Giovanni Gabrieli (1554/1557 - 1612) and Count Moritz of Hesse-Kassel (1572 - 1632), who composed the delightful "Dutch Trumpet Pavane" dance that gave the work its name. Schütz met Claudio Monteverdi (1567 - 1643) while traveling in Italy.His most famous work, "The West Wind Returns and Brings Good Weather," contrasts the cheerful nature of spring with the sadness of love, and was the inspiration for the church concerto "God Rises. And his pupil Johann Schelle (1648-1701), first a choirboy in the Dresden court chapel and later at the Leipzig St. Thomas School, wrote the motet "Come, O Jesus, Come" in a style similar to Schütz's "Religious Choral Works".
