Water From Your Eyes (WFYE) is a unique collaboration between Rachel Brown and Nate Amos and based in New York City. Their debut album Everyone's Crushed, released on Matador Records in 2023, received critical acclaim and was named one of the best albums of the year by The New York Times, The Guardian, Pitchfork, NME, Vogue, Wired, Rolling Stone, and more. Stone, and other annual bests, and quickly became a central figure in the New York alternative scene and established himself as a world-class underground artist. His latest release, "It's A Beautiful Place," opens with the weightless instrumental "One Small Step.It is as if "One Small Step" foreshadows a giant leap forward for Water From Your Eyes. The album is a shimmering megalopolis - a satellite view of an era and musical style, a grand, conscious journey that reconstructs post-Y2K pop songs from a new perspective. The short instrumentals interspersed between songs function as portals that connect the huge, brawny group of songs, which "ultimately became a piece about time, dinosaurs, and the universe," Nate says. I wanted to present a wide range of styles, while keeping in mind that everything is just a moment in time." This album was produced in Nate's bedroom, as was his previous work. WFYE expanded their live activities after the great response to their last album, and when they toured as a support act for Interpol, they stood in front of 160,000 people in Mexico City, and they wrote and recorded this album with the dynamics of a more serious live band in mind. As Nate says, "Life Signs" opens with a nu-metal backbeat and a rhythmic but flat narrative that sounds like a 1997 MTV stream (the kind of nostalgic, messy late 90s pop/ alternative culture). It then builds to a beautiful, crumbling chorus that is typical of WFYE. Nights In Armor" begins with a blissful John Frusciante-esque Stratocaster guitar whirlwind that leads into Rachel's fragile yet poetic monologue. (1/2)
