Based in North Carolina, singer-songwriter Anjimile emerged from Boston's vibrant indie scene while attending Northeastern University, gaining attention for her sincere songwriting, delicate sound textures, and live performances that feel like both prayer and celebration. Anjimile has carved out a unique musical identity characterized by unflinching introspection and profound sincerity. This album extends the themes of her previous work, 'The King', while carrying a larger vessel of acceptance. Crafted over years filled with change, it vividly captures the complexities of transformation—from farewells to new love, from profound grief and loss to rebirth and rediscovery. Reflecting that these past two years marked a major turning point in her life, Anjimile learns to believe in life once more through this work. 〈4AD〉's debut release, this album stands in stark contrast to the intricate complexity of their previous work, 'The King', which featured collaborations with Sam Gendel and James Cribbenia, drummer for Big Thief. Under the intuitive direction of producer Brad Cook (Waxahatchee, Hurray for the Riff Raff, Mavis Staples), the songs unfold more freely, naturally, and organically, supported by warm acoustic guitars, subtle synth textures, rich string arrangements, and delicate rhythm layers. Alongside collaborations with Nathan Stocker (Hippo Campus) and Matt McCaughan (Bon Iver), Sam Beam (Iron & Wine)—a longtime hero and major influence for Anjimile—contributes guest vocals on "Destroying You" (#11). This exploratory yet intimate atmosphere perfectly resonates with Anjimile's delicate storytelling.Tracks like "Turning Away" (#5) and "The Store" (#7) exude a raw, unadorned authenticity reminiscent of early Modest Mouse. Melodically, they evoke a faint nostalgia for late-90s alternative pop while naturally blending folk sensibilities to create approachable hooks. The richly textured 12 tracks of this album, 'You're Free to Go', honestly reflect life's fluctuations, embracing contradictions while finding liberation within kindness. In Anjimile's own words, this album is "breathing within the question" itself.
