Featuring Sarah Connolly and Alastair Beatson, the album includes a collection of works by Bridge and his beloved pupil Britten! Elaine Clermont, who plays the viola once used by Frank Bridge and Benjamin Britten, is a violist in the Doric String Quartet, a British ensemble acclaimed by Gramophone magazine as "one of the finest young string quartets". From the first time she played the instrument, she had an ambition to create an album that would be a testament to Bridge and his beloved pupil Britten, two composers and this special instrument that unites them both. When Britten was forced to leave on a ship for the United States at the outbreak of World War II, Bridge gave him a viola as a parting gift, and the two never saw each other again. We wanted to record Bridge and Britten's viola works on the instrument that was a symbol of their love and respect, and create the sound they would have heard.Her ambitions became a reality in the winter of 2021 with a recording by a stellar lineup featuring Sarah Connolly and Alastair Beatson.
