Continuing their successful recordings of Shostakovich's symphonies, Jon Stuhlgards & the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra present a new recording of Weinberg's Symphony No. 12, dedicated to Shostakovich! Weinberg's "Symphony No. 12" is dedicated to Dmitrij Shostakovich, with whom Weinberg had a close friendship. The work was originally scheduled to be premiered with Kondrashin conducting, but Weinberg was angered by Kondrashin's major omissions and revisions, and canceled the premiere. The work was finally premiered in 1979 under the baton of Maxim Shostakovich, and every five years since the anniversary of the October Revolution in 1917, a major event has been held in which top artists contribute to the program. The "Dawn, Op. 60" on this album is thought to have been composed for the 40th anniversary, but there is no record of it being performed during Weinberg's lifetime, and this is the world premiere recording of it.Yon Sturgårs (Yon Sturgårs) is Principal Guest Conductor of the BBC Philharmonic and the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa, where he is also a violinist in addition to being a conductor. He is also the longtime and highly regarded Artistic Director of the Lapland Chamber Orchestra, which was catapulted into the limelight by the worldwide success of its two 150th anniversary discs, Sibelius: The Complete Symphonies (CHAN10809) and Nielsen: The Complete Symphonies (CHAN10859), released in 2014-2015. He has since demonstrated his outstanding ability with George Antheil's orchestral works. The first recording (CHSA5278) was selected as a special selection and an excellent recording by Record Geijutsu, the second recording was selected as a semi-special selection and an excellent recording by Record Geijutsu, and the third recording (CHSA5310) released in June was reviewed favorably by "Mostly Classical", "Ongaku no Tomo", and other publications.
