John Wilson at the top of his game! Eric Coates Volume 2 "The Magic Garden"! John Wilson is a conductor, arranger, and specialist in light music and American music, and has energetically recorded albums by Richard Rodney Bennett, Copland, and others for Chandos. He won the "BBC Music Magazine Award 2020" in the orchestral category for Korngold's Symphony in F-sharp, Op.40 (CHSA5220), and his recording of Respighi's Roman Trilogy (CHSA5261) has received great acclaim. This is a collection of orchestral works by Eric Coates (1886-1957), a composer-conductor who represented the heyday of British light music. The second volume, which premiered in 1919, shortly after Coates was dismissed from his position as principal viola of the Queen's Hall Orchestra, was a big hit, and a recording made in 1926 includes the famous suite "Summer Days," which Elgar reportedly told Coates he played "so much that the disc wore out," as well as Oscar Wilde's fairy tales. The disc also includes such masterpieces as "The Selfish Giant," based on Oscar Wilde's fairy tale, and "The Enchanted Garden," commissioned by a Swedish broadcasting company.The last song on the album, "Calling All Workers," is Coates' most famous work, adopted as the theme song for the BBC's "Music While You Work" radio program and broadcast twice daily for 27 years. Influenced early on by Arthur Sullivan and Edward German, Eric Coates' music evolved in its own unique way, incorporating elements of jazz and dance bands. The program will be colored by the skillful conducting of John Wilson, a specialist who has recorded two Coates albums for ASV's Light Classics series "White Line" in the past. Tokyo M-Plus
