Dvořák was over 50 years old and had written masterpieces such as "From the New World," "American Quartet," and "Cello Concerto," while Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was in his early 20s and beginning to make a name for himself as a composer while studying at the Royal College of Music in England. Dvořák's "String Quartet No. 13" and Coleridge-Taylor's "Five Fantastic Pieces," both produced in 1895, are at very different stages in their composing careers, yet both are complementary and contemporary works, and the Takács String Quartet's exciting performance of the The Takács String Quartet will offer an exciting performance of this intriguing coupling. The Takács Quartet was founded in 1975 by Gábor Takács-Nagy, a student at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, and others, and gained international attention when it won first prize and the critics' prize at the Evian International String Quartet Competition in 1977, The quartet is one of the world's most prestigious string quartets, having won many competitions in Portsmouth, Bordeaux, Budapest, Bratislava, and other cities.In June 2020, world-renowned violist Richard O'Neill, a Grammy Award winner (+3 nominations), will join the ensemble as a new member.
