Description:
The prestigious Carnegie Mellon Wind Ensemble, conducted by trumpet virtuoso George VosburgCarnegie Mellon Wind Ensemble featuring two works for wind instruments by Richard Strauss in his youth and in his later yearsThe roots of the Carnegie Mellon Wind Ensemble can be traced back to 1908, when it was established as Carnegie Mellon University's Carnegie Mellon University's Kilty Band, founded in 1908. It has a long and distinguished history as a marching and concert band. Today, the band is attracting attention as a band that can play parts independently, like the wind section of an orchestra, and produce the delicate tones of a symphony orchestra, which cannot be produced in a large ensemble performance style. The conductor for this concert is George Vosburg, longtime principal trumpet player of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, who has taught at Carnegie Mellon University since 1992 and has served as music director of the Carnegie Mellon Wind Ensemble since 2011. In recent years, the Carnegie Mellon Wind Ensemble has actively pursued rarely performed works in its repertoire. The ensemble has recorded Richard Strauss' early and late works for wind instruments. Serenade for Winds Op.7" is a work from Richard Strauss's youth.Written for the same 13 wind instruments as Mozart's masterpiece serenade "Grand Partita," it has an early Romantic sound. In his later years, Strauss was critical of this work, saying that it was "nothing more than a fine work by a music student," but "The Happy Workshop," a symphony for wind instruments that later emerged as a mature work with rich textures and clear wind writing, is exactly the ideal work that Strauss sought in his student days. The Happy Workshop" is the ideal work that Strauss sought in his student days. Strauss was at odds with the Nazi regime and resigned as president of the Nazi music bureau in 1935. In 1935, Strauss resigned as president of the Nazi music bureau and entered a difficult period when the mainstream of music was sharp-edged modernism like that of Schoenberg and Stravinsky, and his style was criticized as no longer being in tune with the times. In 1943, Strauss, who had fled the war and was living in an evacuation center, wrote his first work for wind instruments in about 60 years. It is a sonatina for wind instruments titled "From the Workplace of a Wounded Soldier," a counterpart to "The Happy Workshop. This work has a fuller writing style and a more peaceful and beautiful melody than the young Serenade Op.7. The title is a self-deprecating expression of his own recuperation from the flu. And "The Happy Workshop," included here, was composed in 1945, at the end of World War II.The work is written for 16 wind instruments (2 flutes, 2 oboes, 3 clarinets, basset horn, bass clarinet, 2 bassoons, contrabassoon, and 4 horns) and has a rich sound like the "Grand Partita" of the young ideal Mozart. It is a gentle and joyful musical work that shows the trajectory of Richard Strauss, making full use of calligraphy and quotations such as the melody from his own work "Life of a Hero. King International
