Beethoven's works are known as the treasures of string quartets. Among them, the so-called "late" collection of works from No. 12 is considered to be one of his masterpieces. The Italian String Quartet was formed in 1945. The group is highly acclaimed for its rich songs and symphonic depth of sound, and is well known for its collaborations with Pollini and others. The first violinist, Borciani, is a presence whose name has been awarded in one of the world's most prestigious competitions for string quartets. It is a pity that the quartet has disbanded due to old age, but it is a pleasure to still be able to enjoy their fresh performances on this album, a 3-CD set that also includes the "Grand Fugue," the original last movement of No. 13, at the end.　［Comment courtesy of Universal IMS.]
