Description:
Czech virtuoso Špaček records Martinů's two demanding violin concertos—dedicated to Duskin (No. 1) and Erman (No. 2)—with high intensity! Born in 1986, Josef Špáček became the youngest concertmaster in history when appointed to the prestigious Czech Philharmonic in 2011. Now active worldwide as a soloist and chamber musician, this acclaimed performer's new recording features Martinů's Violin Concertos No. 1 and No. 2, paired with Stravinsky's Divertimento suite. Martínů's First Concerto was dedicated to Duskin, who was Stravinsky's "personal violinist." The Second Concerto was dedicated to Erman. Both are demanding works requiring immense energy, but Špáček captivates with his passionate tone and dazzling technique. The Divertimento, arranged by Dushkin from ballet music based on Tchaikovsky's compositions, is a work brimming with beautiful melodies, and this too is a captivating performance. "Martinu's Violin Concerto No. 1 clearly shows inspiration from Stravinsky, evident in its rhythmic subtleties and neoclassical elements."I believe Martinů himself would have been truly delighted by this combination, being included on the same album alongside Duskin and Stravinsky. As a performer, I feel strongly drawn to this era. Every time I play Martinů, I sense that while his music possesses an international breadth, deep Czech roots are undeniably alive within it," says Špaček. His intense passion is overwhelming. Josef Špaček, born in the Czech Republic in 1986. Studied with Itzhak Perlman at The Juilliard School, with Ida Kavafian and Jaime Laredo at The Curtis Institute of Music, and with Jaroslav Fortín at the Prague Conservatory. Third prize at the 2008 Carl Nielsen International Violin Competition; finalist at the 2012 Queen Elisabeth Competition. Served as the Czech Philharmonic's youngest-ever concertmaster from 2011 until December 2015; awarded the title "Associate Artist" in January 2016. He stepped down from the position of concertmaster at the end of the 2019/20 season to focus on his solo career. SUPRAPHON
