Rossini’s Masterpiece “Messa Solenne in Si Minor” Performed by Chailly and the Gewandhaus Orchestra Riccardo Chailly and his flagship ensemble, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, perform one of Rossini’s greatest masterpieces, the “Messa Solenne in Si Minor.” This is footage from a concert held to commemorate the 140th anniversary of Rossini’s death. After completing “William Tell,” Rossini decided to retire from composing operas. He continued to compose piano and vocal works thereafter, and the “Little Solemn Mass,” composed in his later years, is a major work on par with the “Stabat Mater”; Rossini himself referred to this piece as “the last great sin of my old age.” The original instrumentation—12 singers, two pianos, and a harmonium—is a rare, small ensemble, but here we use the orchestral score that Rossini himself wrote, as he later disliked having others orchestrate his works. At the end, Michael Schönheit, who was active as the solo organist at the Gewandhaus Orchestra, makes the organ resound majestically. Singing melodies as beautiful as opera arias are the Bulgarian prima donna Pendačanska, the Italian mezzo-soprano Manuela Casta, the lyric tenor Stefano Secco with his wide-ranging repertoire, and the young Italian bass singer Mirko Palazzi. Chailly, who understands Rossini’s music and is its greatest interpreter, has previously recorded this work with the Bologna Municipal Opera Orchestra; here, however, he delivers a sublime performance with the Gewandhaus Orchestra, with whom he has earned immense trust.
