Description:

Griffin & Lockjaw, the famous duo known as the "Tough Tenors," perform live at the Penthouse club in Seattle in 1962, in a dynamic and exuberant battle and full of song! The battle between the two tenor saxophonists, recorded for a radio program that broadcasted many great performances, has a special charm, There were many great battle teams, including Gene Ammons - Sonny Stitt ("Boss Tenors") and Al Cohn - Zoot Sims ("Al & Zoot"). Among them, the team of Johnny Griffin and Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, known as the "Tough Tenors," gained popularity as the most dynamic and dynamic battling duo, starting with the prestige recording "Battle Stations" in 1960, They remained a regular band until 1962.In 1967, they reunited as members of the Kenny Clarke-Francy Bolan Big Band, and in 1970, they borrowed the rhythm section of the Big Band to record their first battle album in many years. The newly unearthed recordings were first recorded for a radio program at "The Penthouse" club in Seattle in May and June of 1962, the last year of their regular activities. The rhythm section is the same as that of "Pisces," which was recorded in the same year but released as a CD on the OJC label a short time later. All of the songs on this album can be heard on other albums, but "Lockjaw" Davis, who has developed his own style influenced by Ben Webster, Coleman Hawkins, Don Byers, and Lester Young, and Griffin, who is more bop-tinged than Davis, both play with tremendous power and intensity. Both play with tremendous power, and their performances, which are filled with tasteful phrases in the midst of their eloquence, have left audiences shocked and moved. In the battle between the two pipes, a phrase from Monk's classic "Rhythmings" is woven into M3's "OW!" and a riff from "A Night in Tunisia" pops up in M5's "Bahi a." The inclusion of such melodies, which are strongly remembered by jazz fans, is a development that is unique to these two musicians. The inclusion of these melodies, which remain strong in the memories of jazz fans, is a development unique to these two musicians. Horace Parran, who joined this group as a replacement for Junior Mance and Lloyd Meyers, was already confident in his playing after releasing several leader albums on Blue Note. His solos are sharp and shining in many places, such as when he plays his trademark block chords. The producer team is Corey Weese, as they were when the label was launched, and Zev Feldman of ResonanceRecords, who has also established the nickname "Jazz Detective. Zev says, "There is a wonderful exuberance and positive vibration in the recordings here," and Corey Weeds was "so excited to hear that Johnny Griffin and Eddie Lockjaw Davis were recording, he knew he had to do whatever it took to get them out there. The hard-driving performance and tasteful ballads are immortal and brilliant.
