At last! Duruflé's "Requiem" performed on ancient instruments! SACD hybrid disc. The performance of Duruflé's "Requiem" by ancient instruments, which we have been waiting for someone to do, has finally appeared. The Age of Enlightenment Orchestra is one of the most prestigious groups in the world, so it is difficult for fans to remain calm about this release. Duruflé's "Requiem" was originally composed in 1947. Although it is a contemporary work, its beautiful world, which makes extensive use of Gregorian chant, is more pure than Fauré's masterpiece and is very popular. The original was a large orchestration including celesta and tam-tam, but Duruflé reworked it for small orchestra in 1961, and it is performed here in that version. Although the work is only 55 years old, it is rare to find a piece that is so well suited to old instruments, and one can feel the satisfaction of having finally obtained the definitive recording. Of course, the star of the show is the vocal music, with the clear sound of the King's College Choir of Cambridge, which has a history of more than 500 years, and the SACD's high-quality sound recording is full of richness.Mezzo-soprano Patricia Burdon joins the medieval monastery-like world of only male voices, with the high registers of the boys' chorus and the middle and low registers of the adults, as if she were the Virgin, for a soothing and refreshing experience. Another highlight is the organ at King's College. This was the last performance of the organ before it underwent a lengthy restoration. The instrument was repaired in the early 20th century, but some of the parts are still in use, dating back to the early 1600s, and the 400 year old sound is a natural complement to the 55 year old work.
