Vienna State Ballet’s “Peer Gynt” Directed by the Up-and-Coming Choreographer Krug The up-and-coming choreographer Krug presents his unique interpretation of the Nordic masterpiece “Peer Gynt.” *Peer Gynt* is a play written by the Norwegian playwright Ibsen in 1867. Nine years later, Grieg composed the music for it. It is a story that playfully depicts the eventful life of the dreamer and braggart protagonist, Peer Gynt, as he travels the world and eventually returns to his hometown in old age. Krug’s *Peer Gynt* premiered at the Maribor Theater in 2015, was revived by the Vienna State Ballet in 2018, and excerpts were performed during the Vienna State Ballet’s 2018 tour of Japan. The story unfolds through a combination of various dance styles, and the interspersed music by Grieg stirs the imagination. Against a dark stage, we witness Peer Gynt’s free-spirited antics and the tragic end to his life following a life of debauchery. However, in this Krug production, a glimmer of hope is staged beyond the door, and the conclusion is beautifully rendered. Furthermore, the rich sound of the Vienna State Opera Orchestra is complemented by the beautiful, lyrical piano accompaniment of Shino Takizawa, the Vienna State Ballet’s resident pianist. Jakob Feifelrick, in the role of Peer Gynt, offers a superb contrast between the transparency of his early life and the dramatic intensity of his later years, and he performs a perfectly synchronized dance with Alice Firenze, who plays his lover Solveig.
