Mozart's early masterpiece "Mithridate, King of Ponto" by the Berlin State Opera. Composed by Mozart at the age of 14, this tragic tale of love, power, and betrayal revolves around a king and his two sons over a woman. Performed by the Musiciens de la Musique du Palais du Louvre led by the prodigious Marc Minkowski, and featuring a splendid cast of singers, including the Samoan Tenor singer Pene Patti in the title role, this production will be performed by SPAC since April 2007. The production will be directed by Satoshi Miyagi, who has been the artistic director of SPAC since April 2007, and his Japanese production team. This is the first time in the Opera's 280-year history that the Berlin State Opera has invited a Japanese director. Satoshi Miyagi's production evokes Japan at the end of World War II, depicting the repeated cycle of war and revenge. This production was scheduled to premiere in November 2020, but was finally realized after repeated postponements due to the Corona disaster.SynopsisThis is the historical tale of Mithridate, king of Ponto on the Black Sea coast in BC. Mithridate, on his way to battle against the Romans, entrusts his young bride Aspasia to his two sons, and tries to test their attitude toward Aspasia by spreading a false report that he was killed in battle. Farnace, the eldest son, who has had feelings for Aspasia for some time, forcefully presses her to marry him, and he confronts Cifare, the second son, who tries to protect her. Aspasia is attracted to Cifare, and Mithridate returns to Aspasia. Sifare struggles between loyalty to his father and love. King International
