Gounod’s (1818–1893) opera *Polycte*, composed between 1870 and 1878, is based on the story of “Saint Polyctus of Malatya,” a real-life Christian who lived in Armenia during the 3rd century B.C., based on a tragedy written by Pierre Corneille, which in turn was based on the story of “Saint Polyctus of Malatia,” a real-life Christian who lived in Armenia during the Roman Empire in the 3rd century B.C.E. Originally an officer in the Roman army, Polyctus was moved by the fervor of his friend Nearque to convert to Christianity, According to legend, he went to the public square, defied an imperial decree ordering idol worship, smashed the idols, and trampled them to pieces. Gounod meticulously portrays the people associated with him, crafting a magnificent work. Although this is a rare work that is rarely staged, this CD features a superb cast and succeeds in conveying the full scope of the work. Naxos Japan
