Beethoven’s Ominous “Opus 61” Performed by Trio Parnassus Rees’s Arrangement for Piano Trio of the String Trio Ferdinand Ries (1784–1838) was arguably the person most closely associated with Beethoven. Born in Bonn, just like Beethoven, Ries grew up in a musical family. His talent blossomed at an early age, and his father decided to send his son to study under Beethoven, who was already a successful pianist in Vienna. Upon arriving in Vienna in 1801, Ries not only studied under Beethoven but also served as his secretary and copyist, supporting Beethoven as his hearing loss progressed. In 1805, Ries was conscripted into military service, bringing his five-year period of study in Vienna to an end. However, after being exempted from military service for health reasons, Ries spent some time in Bonn, where his fellow townsman, the publisher Nikolaus Zimrock, published his “Two Piano Sonatas, Op. 1,” which were dedicated to his teacher, Beethoven. Subsequently, sheet music for many of Ries’s early works was published by Zimrock. The works recorded here by Trio Parnassus were composed precisely during this period. These works are Beethoven’s “ominous ‘Opus 61’.” In 1806, the Simrock publishing house proudly announced the new work as follows: “Three Grand Trios for Pianoforte, Violin, and Cello, Op. 61, by the renowned composer Ludwig van Beethoven.” The opus number 61 is the number assigned to the Violin Concerto in D major, which we know today. It was a truly puzzling release. In a catalog published by J. M. R. in 1851, this work number appears again; however, in later editions, Opus 61 was marked with the note “See Opus 9.” Indeed, what was released in 1806 was Reis’s arrangement for piano trio of Beethoven’s String Trio, Opus 9. While there are some questions regarding Jimrock’s publication, the arrangement was crafted using techniques unique to Ries, who had observed and thoroughly understood Beethoven’s compositions firsthand.
