RCO principal trombonist Jorgen van Rijn performs three contemporary trombone concertos! The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra's own label, RCO LIVE, has released a licensed recording of three contemporary trombone concertos by Jorgen van Rijn, one of the best trombonists of our time, in their popular "Horizon" series of contemporary music. The trombone concerto by Scottish composer James MacMillan was written by Jorgen van Rijn when he asked MacMillan to write a concerto for trombone. The work was co-commissioned by five orchestras and premiered at the Concertgebouw in April 2017 to great acclaim. Theo Farbay is also famous for his orchestral arrangements of Berg's piano sonatas, and his Lieder, composed in 2007, is an ambitious work in which Farbay's individuality is on full display. Luciano Berio, one of the most famous Italian composers of the 20th century, composed "Solo" in 1999.It was performed here in the revised version of the following year, 2000. Jorgen van Rijn, who studied under George Wiegel at the Conservatory of Rotterdam and Michel Becquet at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Lyon, was principal trombonist of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, and since 1997 has been principal of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, one of the world He is one of the world's top trombonists.
