Pressure Sounds, known for its archival reissues of rare and fine reggae/dub recordings, has compiled a superb collection of The Skatalites' rare recordings that record an important moment in Jamaican cultural history, coinciding with the birth of Studio One and the formation of the mighty The Skatalites! On August 5, 1962, Jamaica finally gained its independence after 300 years of British rule. The immediate post-independence period was indeed a difficult time of poverty and deep inequality, but the burst of energy that independence brought to the Jamaican people was real. News footage of the period showed the frenzy and excitement of the well-dressed crowds, and the boldness and exuberance of the ska music that was emerging across the island provided the perfect soundtrack to the era. Coxsone Dodd opened Studio One in December 1963, the year after independence, and six months later, in June 1964, the Skatalites were formed as Jamaica's supergroup.The young and up-and-coming producer Philip Justin Yap switched most of his production activities to this new recording room at Studio One, where he recorded a number of classic Skatalites songs. He also recorded a number of excellent instrumental compositions with a small brass section, featuring members of the Skatalites as main players and crediting the name of the song's composer and arranger. These pieces, produced for Justin's Top Deck and Tuneico, along with Coxsone's own recordings, beautifully capture the members of the Skatalites at their best in the unique atmosphere of Studio One. They are a rare record of an important moment in Jamaican cultural history that coincided with the birth of the recording studio and the formation of the mighty Skatalites.
