Description:

Finnish Modernism's "Grand Elder" Paavo HeininenFinnish Modernism's "Grand Elder" Paavo Heininen (1938-)'s new album follows his flute concerto "Once upon a time (Autrefois)" (ABCD350). Violinist Kaija Saariketu and pianist Juhani Lagelspätz perform the "Boston Sonata" from 2016. The work was commissioned by Janet Packer of Boston, Massachusetts, who heard Saariketu's recording of the "Violin Sonata," Op. 25 (1970), one of Heininen's most famous works. Heininen's words are apt: "My position as an advocate of absolute music remains unchanged, but what we see and experience invariably colors our thought processes and raises them to a higher energy level."(Heininen) Heininen visited Boston prior to composing the first "Boston Sonata" and was inspired by the city's fascinating and stimulating atmosphere, where the old city's appearance coexists with the modern world. He used leftover material to compose the second "Boston Variations" and the third "Boston Ballad".The Boston Variations are Capriccio notturno, Elegiaco, Symmel, Scherzo, Agitato e pesante, and the Boston Ballad is Guirlande, Duetto, "Pizzica, fuzzica...," Duetto, "Pizzica, fuzzica," Aubade, and Finale. Boston Ballads" are "Guirlande," "Duetto," "Pizzica, fuzzica...," "Capriccio et Pentanomos," "Pezzo tematico," "Aubade," "Finale APPENDIX: Transform...," "Culmen...," and "Pentanomos. Culmen... The three related works were combined as the "Boston Sonata" (Op. 134), which was premiered in May 2018 at a concert in Helsinki celebrating Heininen's 80th birthday, performed by Saariketu and Lagelspätz. ), born in Tammisaari, Finland, graduated from the Sibelius Academy in 1977 and began teaching at the Sibelius Academy in 1985, serving as professor at the Etzberg Chamber Music School in Sweden and the Royal Stockholm School of Music along the way.He has performed mainly as a chamber musician, recording contemporary Finnish works including Heininen and Englund, as well as an album of Sibelius works. Born in Turku. Studied at the Turku Conservatory, the Sibelius Academy, and the Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) Conservatory. Active as a chamber musician and soloist. His representative recordings are Mikko Heinio's "Hermes" (Piano Concerto No. 6) and Brahms' Cello Sonata (SimaxPSC1029) with Tors Mørk. King International
