Daniel Lanois, a master sound wizard, is a producer of many masterpieces including U2, Peter Gabriel, and Bob Dylan, and is respected by many for his unique creation of sound space. Here is his new album, his first under his solo name in about five years. He worked with Johnny Shepherd, a vocalist/organist who actually works in a church, and Rocco DeLuca, a close friend of his, to create a "fusion of traditional gospel music and modern electronics. From the opening track, which includes quotes from Isaac Hayes' songs, the deep organ and vocals are a real thrill. The reggae-flavored (2) is also a nice touch.
