When it comes to Gilels’ performances of Brahms’ concertos, his recording with Jochum and the Berlin Philharmonic is well known; however, this recording is a live performance from February 1972 in Moscow, made several months before that session. Furthermore, he recorded it with Fritz Reiner and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1958; Brahms’s Piano Concerto No. 2 was one of his signature works. Gherelis is renowned for his powerful, steel-like touch, and this performance fully showcases that signature quality.
