The Czech-Jewish composer Ervin Schulhoff (1894–1942) was an exceptionally multifaceted figure in 20th-century music history, moving with ease across Impressionism, Dada, the Viennese Classical tradition, Slavic folk elements, and jazz. This album, centered on orchestral works composed after World War I, once again showcases his strong individuality. The two song symphonies, *Landschaften* and *Menschheit*, which have been rediscovered in recent years, are deeply imbued with themes of loss, rebirth, spirituality, and questions about human destiny; within a scale reminiscent of Mahler, Šulhof’s uniquely keen sensibility comes to life. Furthermore, the inclusion of the *Suite for Chamber Orchestra*, which draws on a jazz sensibility, and an orchestral arrangement of Beethoven’s *Anger Over Lost Small Change* vividly highlights the breadth of Schulhoff’s stylistic range. This live recording, featuring the Hague Resident Orchestra, Principal Conductor Jun Merkur, and mezzo-soprano Barbara Koželi, not only revives a forgotten masterpiece for the present day but also showcases the excellence of one of the Netherlands’ leading orchestras.
