New Orleans Funk Guru = John Cleary The Bywater Sessions" (analog), his first studio album in 7 years New Orleans funk master John Cleary releases The Bywater Sessions, his first studio album in nearly seven years, since "Dynamite" in July 2018. It was recorded at his home studio in the Bywater neighborhood of New Orleans with his all-star big band, aptly named Absolute Monster Gentlemen. It features some of his most beloved songs and new favorites. Cleary says of the new album, "I tried to capture that sound the old-fashioned way, with everyone in the room playing together." Born in England in 1962, John Cleary moved to the U.S. in 1980 at the age of 17 and settled in New Orleans. While working at the famous local club, Maple Leaf Bar, he played with various local legendary musicians and acquired a piano technique full of Latin flavor as represented by Professor Longhair. He is in the tradition of New Orleans piano players such as Alan Toussaint and Dr. John, and has been recognized by Bonnie Raitt and many other famous musicians.He also has such an ardent fan base in Japan that he has performed in Japan six times since his first visit in 2008, and in 2016, he won his first Grammy Award.
