Nate Mercereau / Josh Johnson / Carlos Nino

Guitarist/producer Nate Marcello, saxophonist Josh Johnson, and percussionist Carlos Niño form a new group, the Openness Trio! Debut album released on Blue Note! The album is a collection of five songs from five different recording sessions held at various locations throughout Los Angeles and Ventura County, both indoors and outdoors, including outdoors in the hills of Ojai overlooking the Topatopa Mountains and in the living room of a house in Elysian Park. The three members of this new group have previously collaborated with a variety of artists, including Andre 3000, Michel Ndegeocello, Kamasi Washington, Shabaka Hutchings, Jeff Parker, and Makaya McRaven. The content of this album is an exploration of the profound world of sound, drawing on the experience gained from these collaborations. About this album, Nate Marcello says, "'Openness Trio' is an appropriate title for the group's name. Openness' is the ideal word to describe what is happening here.Listening, immersive emotional expression, deep communication, discovery, trust, exploration, and witnessing and sharing moments of where we are, where we are going, and where we have been. All of this makes our music what it is today," he said. Carlos Niño added, "Rarely do we feel that we can trust someone so much. And that feeling also fosters a greater trust and awareness of ourselves and a sense of being able to trust ourselves. One of my favorite songs to play with the trio is the aptly titled "Openness. The fully psychic communication and connection we build together is inspiring, deeply nourishing, and energizing. It is truly 'Openness. And Josh Johnson added, "The trio's title speaks to much more than just the music. The trio and its members have broadened my perception of music, both inside and outside of it. I have been reminded to value the beauty and deep love of music above all else.I remember with great fondness the time we played together in an orchard in Ojai at the beginning of 2021. I remember playing music with others for the first time in a long time and feeling a strong bond with them. That day, the trio became a three-dimensional entity for me, and I was elated from the start."
