The 1974 recording that gives this "Luminessence" series its name is a unique ECM masterpiece, composed by Keith Jarrett for the Stuttgart Orchestra conducted by saxophonist Jan Garbarek and Mladen Gutesha. Gutecha is a conductor who conducted the Stuttgart string orchestra in "Metamorphosis" on Jarrett's 1974 album "In the Light," and was also the conductor for "Arbour Zena" (1976). The saxophone part is almost entirely improvised in a work that shows Keith's affinity for Jan Garbarek's playing, and Keith does not participate in the performance. He studied Jan's music and the scales he used, and the concept of the harmonic structure, or framework of the piece, was conceived with Jan in mind. .....
