To commemorate the 70th anniversary of Verve Records, founded by Norman Granz, a 4-LP box set has been released. This collection celebrates the many recordings made during the Norman Granz era at Verve Records, featuring a succession of legendary singers and musicians such as Ella, Billy, Louis, Anita O’Day, Mel Tormé, Bing Crosby, Fred Astaire, Basie, Hamp, Bird, Oscar Peterson, Milt Jackson, and many other renowned singers and musicians. While this alone would make it a superb collection, it doesn’t stop there—it also features J.J. Johnson, Nat “King” Cole, Coleman Hawkins, Bud Powell, Stan Getz, Lester Young, Art Tatum, Roy Eldridge, Sonny Rollins, Sonny Stitt, Buddy Rich, Charlie Shavers, Benny Carter, Johnny Hodges, Charlie Parker, Flip Phillips, Ben Webster, Oscar Peterson, Bernie Kessel, Ray Brown, and J.C. Hard—along with Beatnik poetry by Jack Kerouac, stand-up comedy by Mort Sahl, Jonathan Winters, Sherry Berman—it’s clear that Grantz expanded his scope beyond jazz by producing live comedy albums, resulting in a richly diverse collection. The booklet includes an essay on the history of Verve Records’ founding, as well as fascinating commentary on the repertoire by Tad Harshon, author of *Norman Granz: Th*. Granz established this label primarily as a base of operations for Ella Fitzgerald; furthermore, as a figure who championed artists more passionately than anyone else, he viewed it as a venture in which he staked his reputation to launch artists into the spotlight, and from its inception, the label held a top-tier position among independent jazz labels. *Included only in the 4-LP box set (not included in the 2-CD set) (From the manufacturer’s information)
