A collection of orchestral works by Tanegi, the darling of Britain’s angry punk generation! Mark-Anthony Tanegi, a figure who continues to stand out even within the diverse world of British contemporary music, was influenced by modern jazz artists such as Miles Davis. In addition to strong rhythms and jazz harmonies, he incorporated elements of Stravinsky and punk rock, and with this unique eclectic style, he catapulted to the forefront of the scene in the 1990s. He was also highly praised by Simon Rattle and served as Composer-in-Residence for the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra; the orchestral piece “Three Screaming Popes,” written during that time, became one of his signature works. This album brings together works written for ballet since the beginning of the 21st century, allowing listeners to enjoy Tanegishi’s punk-inspired world, which remains as rebellious as ever. Hysterical screams with a deliberately thin, street-band-like sound; distorted ragtime rhythms; clusters that foreshadow doom; and lyrical melodies faintly audible in the brief lulls between raging storms of sound—this is the essence of the Taneji World.
