The piano is a prime example, and the saxophone would likely be a natural choice as well. In jazz, the bassoon is one of the rarer instruments. With its mid-to-low register, it lacks the brilliance of an alto saxophone or trumpet, but it is a compelling instrument that draws the listener in with its depth. Sagara first encountered the bassoon in a school band during his youth and was thrilled by the swing jazz that was part of their repertoire at the time. While he studied classical music due to the instrument’s nature, his heart was set on jazz. As he continued performing jazz alongside his classical activities, an invitation from bassist Shinichi Kato led him to launch this trio. This album marks Rei Sagara’s debut as a bandleader, featuring a selection of songs that transcend genres, including jazz standards, classical, and rock. Arranged by pianist Taihei Asakawa, these pieces weave together into a single narrative, allowing listeners to fully appreciate the unique resonance of each instrument within a drumless ensemble. This represents a new form of expression through Sagara’s own bassoon and a challenge to expand the boundaries of the instrument’s possibilities.
