The LP [PHILIPS] release of this famous recording attracted a great deal of attention at the time of its release - it was "specially selected" in the "Reco Gei" review at the time - many critics praised it. The performance here was a rare one. The thick sound of the prestigious Bavarian Radio SO is also a must-hear. Although there is a revised version of this work with some lyrics that had to be corrected, Kondrashin uses the premiere version here as well.

Kondrashin's passionate performance of "Babi Yar" is a performance that only he could have given at the premiere. The high level of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Chorus is noteworthy, and they present Shostakovich as pure music in a rich and rhythmic manner. This recording was only released on CD in Japan in 1995 as a special edition of the 24-bit series, but was never commercially released, and has always been a topic of conversation among Shostakovich and Kondrashin fans. The long-awaited revival of this rare recording, which very few people in the know have seen on CD or heard in paper jacket, is finally here!
