NAXOS' series of complete Mozart masses with the West German Radio Choir of Cologne and the Cologne Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Christoph Poppen. This third collection includes works from the late teens to the early twenties and the Salzburg period. The "Mass for the Feast of the Holy Trinity," K. 167, is the only one of Mozart's masses without a soloist, perhaps because it was written in accordance with Archbishop Coloredo's order to keep masses short and concise, but it is a magnificent work with an imposing style and a magnificent fugue. The next two Missa Brevis (Little Masses) were also written in a compact form to suit the archbishop's tastes. The Mass in D major, composed in 1774 and sung by the chorus without orchestral prelude, is believed to be the first work published after Mozart's death. The Mass in B-flat major was probably the last liturgical work he wrote for the Coloredo, and was his graduation work from Salzburg.The work uses a challenging tonality for religious music of the time, a simple credo, and the unusually long closing words of the Agnus Dei, "Dona nobis pacem," which uses the gavotte rhythm popular in Paris, among other provocative passages.
