Description:
This is a collection of works by Tibor Harshani (1898-1954), who was born in Hungary and formed the "Ecole de Paris" (Paris School) in Paris with composers from many countries. His early works are essentially romantic in nature, and the opening of the "Violin Sonatina" from 1919 has an interesting, languid tone reminiscent of Franck's sonatas. The work eventually incorporated the jazz rhythms that swept Europe at the time, as well as the folk elements of his fellow countryman Bartók, and became both complex and earthy as it grew in stature. In the "Viola Sonata" from his last year, the ethnic elements appear in a refined form, and the restrained expression of this masterpiece is also noteworthy.
