In Hungary at the beginning of the 20th century, Bartók and Kodály enthusiastically collected and studied folk music and incorporated it into their own works. The results of these studies were passed on to the next generation of composers, who produced a succession of works using traditional Hungarian melodies. Farkas, who was a professor at the Liszt School of Music and taught Kurtág and Ligeti; Veresh, who studied under Kodály and worked as an assistant to Bartók; Kokay, who was the music director of the Hungarian Broadcasting Corporation and is known as a Liszt scholar; Veiner, who studied under Kodály but lost his life in a concentration camp; and Kurtág, who studied under Kodály but lost his life in the war. Veinel, who studied with Kodály but died in a concentration camp; and Fried, who was also persecuted during the war but managed to survive and was active in the Netherlands after the war.
