[Three Masterpieces by a Little-Known Violinist Who Captivated Classical-Era Europe, Performed on Period Instruments] Born in Milan in 1748, the violinist and composer Niccolò Mestrino gained fame in Venice after studying under the master Nardini. From the fall of 1780, he served at the court of the Esterházy family in Hungary for five years, where he likely participated in the premiere of Haydn’s famous six string quartets from Op. 33. He then traveled to Paris, where he attracted attention for his unique playing style and profound emotional expression, and gained the favor of Viotti, a master of his generation. Through this connection, he secured a position at Marie-Antoinette’s newly established opera house in early 1789, but passed away at the end of July that same year, shortly after the outbreak of the French Revolution. The performers on this recording, which vividly conveys Mestrino’s achievements as a composer, are Europe’s leading period instrument musicians, led by the Bulgarian virtuoso Plamena Nikitasova. After studying under Chiara Banchini in Basel, Nikitasova has continued to unearth and introduce lesser-known composers of the mid-18th century through her well-reasoned musical interpretations; On this album as well, she captures the essence of the works with her insightful interpretations, skillfully employing evocative glissandos based on late 18th-century performance practices where appropriate to reveal the true value of these richly nuanced Classical-era compositions. The exquisite, dignified dialogue in the duets with the masterful Christoph Kowen is remarkable, as is the depiction of both brilliance and depth in the two concertos, where the small ensemble—with a single performer per part—truly shines. As noted in the liner notes by Peter Volney—a renowned Bach scholar (in German, English, and French)—these three pieces are particularly interesting and substantial in their connection to Haydn’s works.
