The series “Bruckner’s Letters and Music.” Volume 4 sheds light on the complex relationship between Bruckner and Eduard Hanslick, the influential critic who reigned over the 19th-century Viennese music scene. Hanslick, known as a passionate advocate for Brahms and a sworn enemy of Wagner, continued to level scathing criticism at Bruckner—acknowledging his talent as an organist but describing his symphonies as "anarchic" and a "nightmarish hangover style." Their rift began in 1875 when Hanslick, then a professor at the University of Vienna, vehemently opposed Bruckner’s appointment as a lecturer there. Bruckner later recalled, “Hanslick regarded me as his eternal enemy for accepting the lectorship.” However, the two achieved a private reconciliation in their later years. In addition to readings (in German) of letters and critical essays that recount this feud, this album features six of Hanslick’s songs—whose publication was reportedly supported by Brahms—introducing his lesser-known talent as a composer. Also included are a rare draft of Bruckner’s “Symphony in B-flat major” and excerpts from Brahms’s “Waltz Collection,” dedicated to Hanslick. A cast led by the renowned German actor Beck—a familiar face in this series—conveys the atmosphere of Vienna surrounding Bruckner at that time. Naxos Japan
