Description:

Telemann was one of the most prolific composers of the Baroque period. Among his works, about 120 suites for orchestra (called "overtures" at that time) are known to exist today, and it is said that he wrote more than 1,000 works including those that have been scattered. The "Six Overtures in Four or Six Voices" included here were announced for publication in 1734, with reservations sought in March 1736, and when published in Hamburg in the same year, they were well received and are said to have helped Telemann to recover from his financial difficulties. Only one copy of the score had been kept in the Prussian National Library, which was believed to have been destroyed in the war, but in 1999 it was discovered in the Russian National Library in Moscow. The French titles and the French notation of the voices (Dessus, Haut contre, Taille, Basse) engraved on the score indicate that Telemann's main target was the educated German public who understood French, and that he was selling the orchestral suite (overture) to the French public, which was the birthplace of this musical form. The overtures are also intended to appeal to France, where the orchestral suite (overture) form of music was born.On the other hand, his orchestral suites, while following the French style, also incorporate elements of Italian concertos and even dances collected by Telemann in various countries, giving a strong sense of the fusion of musical elements from various countries. The variety of instrumentation and choice of dances for each piece allows the listener to enjoy Telemann's well-developed orchestral technique. The Orfeo Baroque Orchestra (led by Mihi Geick), which has been active at the forefront of ancient music for more than 30 years, has released more than 40 albums mainly on the cpo label, with a repertoire ranging from baroque music by Telemann and Bach to symphonies by the Mannheim School, Mozart, and Schubert. He has released more than 40 albums, mainly on the cpo label. He has given concerts all over the world and has appeared at world music festivals such as the Salzburg Festival and the Lucerne Festival. In this recording, the orchestra's principal oboe player, Karen van Heerden, conducts, and the bassoonist is Makiko Kurabayashi, who is active in Europe.
