This release coincides with the 100th anniversary of the death of Franz Ksabaer Scharwenka, a Polish-German composer known for his four-hand piano arrangements of Beethoven's symphonies. It features one of his best-known works, the Piano Concerto No. 1 and his only symphony. The former was originally composed as a fantasy in two parts for solo piano, but was later revised into a concerto in three movements, which was premiered in 1877 to great success and dedicated to Franz Liszt. The work's melancholy melody is reminiscent of Tchaikovsky's, and the virtuoso Jonathan Powell gives a superb performance of this fascinating work, with its superbly crafted passages. The latter work, completed in 1882, is typical of the late Romantic symphonies, with beautiful melodies and chromatic harmonic progressions that show Wagnerian influences. 1885 saw the German conductor Theodor Thomas conduct this work to great acclaim in Rostock and in New York.
