Description:
Friedrich Theodor Fröhlich is a Swiss composer belonging to the early Romantic school. This album contains three of his string quartets. Born the sixth child of a magistrate father, he studied law at the University of Basel in order to pursue a career in law, but after falling ill, he returned to his hometown and eventually decided to become a composer. He achieved some success in Berlin while teaching at a public high school, but financial difficulties and marital troubles led to his tragic death in 1836, when he threw himself into the River Aare. Several of his works are known to exist, but the date of composition of some of them is not clear, and future research is needed. This string quartet is a substantial work filled with flowing melodies reminiscent of Mendelssohn. Naxos Japan
