Although Schubert is known as the “King of Art Songs,” he composed piano sonatas continuously from a young age. Each of these is a masterpiece, a series of splendid works that blend Beethoven’s influence with a song-like quality. The Piano Sonata No. 1, written when he was 18, is currently a three-movement work; however, it is believed to have originally consisted of four movements, with the final movement either lost or left unfinished. It is a quintessentially Schubertian piece, brimming with lyricism, in which melodies in minor keys are occasionally interwoven with bright, cheerful themes. The No. 13 in A major is a small-scale sonata composed by Schubert at the age of 22. This piece is also notable for its alternation between major and minor keys and the light, airy melody of the third movement. No. 17 was composed in 1825. This is a large-scale sonata, lasting about 40 minutes in its entirety, which makes a technically demanding and powerful impression. It is also known for its unexpectedly elegant and light final movement, which contrasts with the weighty first and third movements. The performer, Maestro Primiano, is a pianist who specializes in historical instruments and excels at works from the 18th and 19th centuries.
